Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Training

“Protect What Matters—Wear It Right.”

This PPE Training course is designed to help employers, supervisors, and employees understand how to select, use, and maintain personal protective equipment safely and effectively in the workplace.

The course provides a solid understanding of the role of PPE in managing workplace hazards and explains the legal responsibilities of employers, employees, and the self-employed under current health and safety legislation. Learners will explore best practices for the correct use, supervision, maintenance, and storage of PPE, ensuring it offers maximum protection.

Importantly, the course places PPE within the hierarchy of control, reinforcing that it should be used as a last line of defence—not a substitute for other risk-reduction methods. By the end, learners will be equipped to choose the right PPE, use it confidently, and contribute to a safer work environment.

Module 1: Understanding PPE and Legal Responsibilities

This module introduces the purpose of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the workplace and explains its role in managing health and safety risks. Learners will explore what qualifies as PPE, what is excluded under the PPE Regulations, and where PPE fits within the hierarchy of control measures. The module also covers key legal requirements for selecting and using PPE, along with the responsibilities of employees in ensuring it is used correctly.

Module 2: Risk Assessment and PPE Selection

This module explains how risk assessments help identify when PPE is needed and who is responsible for carrying them out. It covers the five key steps of a risk assessment, the difference between hazards and risks, and how to select appropriate PPE based on those findings. Learners will also understand the importance of consulting employees during selection and the duties of manufacturers and suppliers in correctly marking and certifying PPE.

Module 3: Managing and Using PPE – Part 1

This module covers the employer’s responsibilities for ensuring the proper selection, use, maintenance, and storage of PPE. Through a real-world case study, learners will see the consequences of failing to manage PPE effectively. The module also explores specific risks and protective measures for the eyes and face, head, respiratory system, and hearing—including the importance of fit testing for respiratory protective equipment.

Module 4: Managing and Using PPE – Part 2

This module focuses on PPE for body, limb, and foot protection, including high-visibility clothing and specialist equipment such as personal fall protection systems and PPE for working near or in water. It also covers the use of disposable PPE, the importance of health surveillance, and key practices for cleaning, maintenance, storage, and inspection. Learners will explore the need for clear information, instruction, training, and how to manage PPE effectively in emergency situations.

Assessment

At the end of the course, learners will complete a theory-based assessment to confirm their understanding of safe and effective use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the workplace.

The assessment consists of multiple-choice questions covering:

• The purpose and legal requirements of PPE

• Risk assessment and appropriate selection of PPE

• Employer and employee responsibilities

• Proper use, maintenance, storage, and inspection of PPE

• Specific protection for different body parts and work environments

• Fit testing, training, and emergency considerations

The assessment is designed to reinforce key learning points and ensure that participants are confident in applying safe PPE practices. Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Certificate of PPE Awareness Training, demonstrating their commitment to workplace health and safety.
