This Risk Assessment training course is designed to help you meet your legal duties under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 by guiding you through the process of conducting a suitable and sufficient workplace risk assessment.

No qualifications or PPE required
This training course is delivered on-site at your location or at a training centre location and typically lasts half a day, No formal qualifications are needed to attend, making it accessible to all experience levels. Group sizes are kept small, usually between 6–12 delegates, to ensure focused, hands-on learning. Delegates are not required to bring any PPE for this training course
Module 1: Introduction to Risk Assessment
This module introduces the fundamentals of risk assessment and explains why it’s a critical part of workplace safety. Learners will explore what a risk assessment involves, the concept of “reasonably practicable”, and the general principles of prevention. It also covers key definitions, who is responsible for carrying out assessments, and the importance of recording and documenting findings properly.
Module 2: Legal Responsibilities
This module outlines the legal framework surrounding risk assessment, focusing on key legislation such as the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. It also highlights supporting regulations, provides practical guidance on legal duties, and explains how compliance is monitored and enforced by regulatory bodies.
Module 3: Carrying Out Effective Risk Assessments
This module guides learners through the key steps of conducting a thorough risk assessment. It explains the difference between a hazard and a risk, then walks through the process:
1. Identifying hazards
2. Determining who may be harmed and how
3. Evaluating the level of risk and selecting controls
4. Recording significant findings
By the end of this module, learners will understand how to assess risks methodically and document their findings effectively.
Module 4: The Hierarchy of Control
This module introduces the hierarchy of control, a structured approach to reducing risk in the workplace. Learners will explore each level of control—starting with elimination and substitution, through to engineering controls, administrative measures, and personal protective equipment (PPE). It also highlights the importance of ongoing maintenance, safe systems of work, and ensuring effective training, instruction, and communication to support long-term risk reduction.
Module 5: Reviewing and Updating Risk Assessments
This module highlights the importance of regularly reviewing risk assessments to ensure they remain accurate and effective. It focuses on Step Five: Review and Update, explaining when and how reviews should take place, what the review process involves, and the need to communicate changes to employees and contractors to maintain a safe working environment.

At the end of the course, learners will complete a theory-based assessment to evaluate their understanding of risk assessment principles and legal responsibilities.
The assessment includes multiple-choice questions covering:
• The purpose and importance of risk assessments
• Legal duties under key health and safety regulations
• The five steps of conducting a risk assessment
• The hierarchy of control and risk management strategies
• Review procedures and the importance of ongoing updates
This assessment is designed to reinforce learning and ensure each participant can confidently apply risk assessment practices in their own work environment. Upon successful completion, learners will receive a Certificate of Risk Assessment Training, demonstrating their competence and commitment to workplace safety.
