The course is non-industry-specific, making it suitable for banksmen working in construction, logistics, manufacturing, agriculture, and more. Learners will gain a clear understanding of their responsibilities, how to communicate effectively with drivers and operators, and how to use recognised signalling systems to manage vehicle movement safely.
No Prior Experience Needed
No previous training is required to begin this course, making it ideal for new banksmen. However, this course does not replace practical, site-specific training, which is essential for full competency. It’s designed to complement hands-on instruction by providing the theoretical knowledge and context needed to support real-world learning.
Supports Ongoing Learning
For those who have already completed practical training, this course also serves as a valuable refresher, helping to reinforce key safety principles and signalling techniques.
To give learners a broader perspective, the course also outlines what effective practical training should include, so participants know what to expect—or what their past training should have covered. This practical training course is delivered on-site at your location and typically lasts half a day, No formal qualifications are needed to attend, making it accessible to all experience levels. Group sizes are kept small, usually between 6–10 delegates, to ensure focused, hands-on learning.
Delegates must bring their own PPE as specified for the course—this may include safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, hard hats, gloves, or eye protection, this could also depend on site specific training location.
Module 1: Introduction to Banksman Training
Start with the essentials. This module introduces the role of the banksman and why it’s critical to site safety. Learners will explore key legal responsibilities, including relevant Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance, and gain a clear understanding of the core duties involved in directing vehicles and mobile plant. The module also covers required training standards and the golden rules banksmen must follow to carry out their role safely and effectively.
Module 2: Safe Management of Vehicles and Mobile Plant
Creating a safe site starts with proper planning. This module covers the legal duties of employers in managing vehicle and mobile plant operations, with a focus on conducting effective risk assessments. Learners will explore a range of vehicle control measures, including safe traffic routes, pedestrian walkways, reversing protocols, speed limits, visibility, and lighting. It also looks at additional safety features such as traffic calming, temporary routes, and overall site design—ensuring vehicle movements are predictable, controlled, and low-risk.
Module 3: Communication and Signals
Clear communication saves lives—especially when it comes to moving vehicles and mobile plant. This module highlights the importance of planning and coordination before any manoeuvre begins. Learners will understand how to prepare effectively with drivers and operators, ensuring everyone is aligned before movement starts. The module also introduces standard banksman hand signals and verbal commands, including how and when to use them, supported by real-life demonstrations to show them in action. It’s all about creating clear, confident, and consistent communication on site.
Module 4: Training, Visibility Aids & PPE
Safety starts with the right preparation—and the right equipment. This module covers the importance of training in safe systems of work, with a focus on supporting new or less experienced banksmen. Learners will understand the employer’s duty to ensure competence and ongoing support.
It also explores essential visibility aids like cameras, mirrors, audible alarms, and communication tools such as radios and verbal signals. Finally, the module covers key personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including high-visibility clothing, head protection, and appropriate gear for challenging weather—ensuring banksmen are seen, protected, and ready for all conditions.
Assessments
Theory & Practical Assessments
To ensure learners are both knowledgeable and competent, the course includes two key assessments:
• Theory Assessment – A short, structured test covering the essential principles of the banksman role, including legal responsibilities, communication methods, and safe working practices. This confirms understanding of the course content and reinforces key safety messages.
• Practical Assessment – A hands-on evaluation where learners demonstrate correct use of hand signals, communication with drivers, spatial awareness, and safe positioning during vehicle manoeuvres. This real-world practice helps build confidence and ensures they’re ready to apply their skills on-site.
Successful delegates will receive a Certificate of Training, providing evidence of competence and supporting workplace compliance.
